Training methods and ethos.

Our training methods are force free, reward based and build great bonds for you and your pup. You both learn to live in co-operation with each other.
We have trained extensively with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT).
Our Puppy Class Trainer, Elaine, is a qualified Easy Peasy Puppy Instructor (EPPI) trained by Steve Mann, founder of the IMDT.
Many of the pups we have trained are still with us after several years. They are well loved optimistic adult dogs and we feel love and pride for them in equal measure.

Pre-class Training Support: Online & Home.
Starts when you have signed up!
This is training you can do whilst waiting to take your pup out for the first time. It is preparation for Puppy Classes. Dogs are very “impressionable” when young, and you have an opportunity to build the foundations of a wonderful life for them.
Training carried out at this time builds a solid foundation for all future training.
PHASE 1: Pre-Arrival Preparations: Home visit & in-depth puppy consultation.
The aim of Clever K9s home visit & in-depth puppy consultation is to get your pup’s training off to a great start. Before your puppy even arrives with you, we will visit you to gather and share information about your exciting new family member.
PHASE 2: Pre-Coming Out Phase.
Once your puppy arrives, you can begin their training journey. Take advantage of your puppy’s eagerness to learn whilst you wait for your vet’s clearance to take them outside. Get ready for your puppy class so you can attend with confidence!
The exercises are intended to teach your pup to focus on you as their handler. There are lessons for you too!
- Reward selection.
- Using a long-line.
- Early training for reflex to name.
- Eye contact this will be developed much further in class.
- Conditioning recall cues – a good start for later recall.
PHASE 3: Puppy Training Group Class
Eight weeks of puppy training classes covering home & outdoor skills as taught to us by the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT). Lots of skills, lots of practice – all using force-free techniques.
- Eye contact.
- Recall.
- Loose lead walk.
- Puppy circuits.
- Seek-backs.
- Lets go.
- Handling,
- …and much, much more to create the bond between you and your puppy.
