Our Hot Weather Precautions

We monitor the local and national weather forecasts in order to be prepared for hot weather conditions. If hot weather is expected then we can preempt hazards that may arise by changing services in advance. We maintain our Canine First Aid Certification and always carry Canine First Aid Equipment in our van.

Be prepared to cancel plans to travel, or walk, with your dog at times when temperatures are too high.

We have Bluetooth Temperature Loggers in the vans cargo area. These are monitored when transporting dogs. The loggers give an alert when the temperature reaches 23’c – a safe temperature but hot weather countermeasures will be considered.

Despite ventilation, monitoring, and our first aid response, transporting the dogs can be a risk due to the temperature reached in the van.

For this reason, care will be taken to only transport dogs when they are unlikely to be harmed by excessive heat.

We will act to protect your dog, and we have suitable first aid equipment and procedures.

The first walk session will probably proceed as normal before the temperature is too high.

The rise in temperature, as the morning progresses, can be too high after 11:00-12:00.

Some or all, of these countermeasures will be employed,

  • Once the temperature is too high only home alone dogs, or special requests, will be visited with no transporting of dogs in the van.
  • The van cargo area will receive additional ventilation – this may involve parking in a shaded place with all doors open.
  • We can also check the temperature of any surface that the dogs are to be walked on to avoid scorched paws.
  • Artificial grass and rubberised safety surfaces can be a real problem for dog’s paws. Avoid them!
  • Individual dog’s temperatures can be taken by infra-red thermometers and appropriate action taken to cool them.
  • Extra drinking water to be provided.
  • Reduced levels of exercise and excitement.
  • Cooling sprays/bedding to be used.
  • Reduced fees for replacement home/welfare visits and reduced walks.
  • No fees for cancelled sessions.
